The Galapagos Islands, a pristine ecosystem teeming with unique flora and fauna, is not just a travel destination but a precious heritage that constantly needs our care.
At Ecoventura, our commitment to sustainable tourism drives us to preserve the Enchanted Islands’ beauty and vitality. We not only implement conservation initiatives but also educate our guests on the importance of protecting this unique destination.
If you’re planning a trip to the Galapagos Islands, here’s how you can contribute to the conservation efforts during your visit with us.
Plant a Tree in Galapagos
Join our tree-planting initiative at the Tortoise Reserve, where we plant native trees sourced directly from the Galapagos National Park. This activity is about more than just planting; it’s about restoring the natural habitat of the Galapagos tortoises. We hold this activity once a week during our visit to the highlands of Santa Cruz Island.
Planting Hope in the Galapagos Highlands
When packing for your trip, remember that you can make a significant impact on the local communities. We collaborate with the schools Carlos Darwin and Unidad Especializada Corazones Unidos in Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, on San Cristobal Island. Guests can bring essential educational materials and supplies. So far in 2024, we have collected 56 kilograms of school supplies thanks to our guests’ generosity. To see the list of needed supplies and make a contribution, please visit Pack for a Purpose.
Join the Wild Club – Charles Darwin Foundation
Support ongoing conservation efforts by joining the Charles Darwin Foundation’s Wild Club. This monthly giving program helps expand and sustain the foundation’s work, directly supporting 72 monthly donors and counting. As a member, you’ll receive exclusive benefits like special newsletters and invitations to insightful webinars, connecting you deeper with their mission.
Respect the National Park Rules & Regulations
The Galapagos National Park has set specific rules to protect its unique ecosystem. Guests must follow these rules while visiting the park. For example, you must be accompanied by a licensed naturalist guide and stay on marked trails to protect the wildlife. In 2024, the park implemented three additional rules:
1. Adhere to visiting hours: 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with specific guidelines for scuba diving activities.
2. Use sound players (radios, cellphones, speakers) only with headphones.
3. Use only reef-safe sunscreen to protect coral reefs and marine life.
For more detailed information on these regulations, please visit the Galapagos National Park website.
Consider our Recommendations
Ecoventura recommends guests bring biodegradable or reef-safe sunscreen and wear SPF sun shirts. More brands are becoming available as fragile destinations increasingly restrict harmful sunscreens. Additionally, to avoid disturbing wildlife, we suggest wearing neutral-colored clothing and refraining from using selfie sticks.
In 2022, Ecoventura opened a Recycling Facility in the Galapagos to ensure no garbage produced on board our fleet is left behind. All plastic, cardboard, and glass are compacted and recycled. We ask guests to do their part by removing packaging materials at home or taking them to the mainland rather than leaving trash onboard in the Galapagos.
Every action counts when it comes to conservation. By participating in these initiatives, you not only enjoy a fulfilling travel experience but also contribute to the long-term sustainability of one of Earth’s most incredible places.
Let’s make a positive impact together!
